Back in 1974 Dr Alvar Carrillo Gil and his wife Carmen Tejero de Carrillo Gil made a generous donation. They gave their important art collection to the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes INBA. This act solidified their legacy.
It all began in 1938. Dr Carrillo Gil bought “La Chole” by José Clemente Orozco. He was a pediatrician at the time. That purchase sparked a lifelong passion for collecting 20th-century Mexican art.
His collection grew to include works from the Mexican Painting School. It also featured pieces from international artistic avant-gardes. Highlights include works by José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Diego Rivera Gunther Gerzso Wolfgang Paalen and Luis Nishizawa are also featured. The museum boasts a collection of 270 Japanese prints. These prints date from the 17th to the 20th century. There is also a notable collection of European modern prints and posters.
Dr Carrillo Gil wanted to share his collection with the world. He played a crucial role in promoting Mexican art. He and his wife presented their collection in international exhibitions. They wanted a dedicated space to preserve and display the art. They wanted to make it accessible to everyone.
The museum’s design is itself a work of art. Dr Carrillo Gil entrusted Fernando Gamboa with the exhibition layout. Architects Augusto H Álvarez and Enrique Carral Icaza handled the architectural project. Construction began in 1958. The design features a system of ramps. These ramps allow visitors to move through the museum easily. A central skylight provides natural light. The iconic interior ramps are part of the MACG logo since 1998.
The Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil continues to host exciting exhibitions. “Atravesar el tiempo. Memorias y presentes de la colección Carrillo Gil” was recently on display. It featured works by José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera.
