It’s located inside the renovated Rancho El Molino, originally named San Joseph by its English founders in the 16th century. Later, the name was changed to San José. The Museo Chimaltonalli opened its doors on November 26, 2017. This museum beautifully showcases the history and culture of Chimalhuacán. The collection at Museo Chimaltonalli boasts over 770 artifacts. These items were generously donated by local families. They offer a glimpse into the past, including pre-Hispanic sculptures, historical documents, everyday utensils, vibrant carnival costumes, and ornate decorations. Imagine stepping back in time as you explore the twelve exhibit halls. Each room at the Museo Chimaltonalli is dedicated to a different historical period. The first room explores the identity of Chimalhuacán. The second delves into prehistory. The third focuses on the pre-Hispanic era. The fourth covers the colonial period. This chronological journey continues through to the twelfth room. The final room displays the winning works from stone carving competitions. It’s called “Canto del Cincel,” or “Song of the Chisel.” Beyond the artifacts, Museo Chimaltonalli holds a treasure trove of over 400 photographs. These images offer a fascinating window into everyday life in Chimalhuacán. They span from 1914 to the 1960s. The Museo Chimaltonalli isn’t just a repository of the past.
