The Museo Arqueológico de Xochimilco stands on what was once a Nahuatl settlement. Imagine this area centuries ago. It was a thriving community long before the museum’s construction began in 1974. The museum finally opened its doors on November 21 1985.
Look around at the building itself. It is a Porfirian-era structure with Neo-Indigenous architecture. This building even leans towards the Neo-Classical. It dates back to 1910. Before it was a museum it was the Casa de Bombas. This was part of the old Xochimilco aqueduct and pumping station. Ornate gardens surround the building. They stretch towards the Acalote de Santa Cruz canal.
Inside the Museo Arqueológico de Xochimilco there is a remarkable collection. It contains about 12000 artifacts. Most are made of fired clay and stone. These items were found in the surrounding lands and canals of Xochimilco. About 2000 objects are on display.
The museum’s collection includes prehistoric artifacts. You will also see sculpted warriors and animals. There are even parts of an old ball game court. Keep an eye out for Teotihuacan-era inscriptions. The museum also displays paleontological remains. These include the bones of a mammoth.
