“A treasure trove of history awaits you” I say. Welcome to the Museo Amancio Alcorta. This isn’t just a museum. It’s a living testament to Moreno’s past. Established in 1964 it initially resided within the municipal gardens.
Imagine the dedication. Intense work went into creating this place. Juan Carlos Ocampo a local chronicler tirelessly gathered historical artifacts. He envisioned a museum showcasing Moreno’s heritage. He sought a fitting location. His efforts led him to the Quinta Alcorta also known as Monte Alcorta. This ten-hectare estate belonged to the Alcorta family.
Unfortunately the family decided to subdivide and sell the land. Yet through determination the Alcorta family gifted the smaller of the two houses and surrounding land for the museum. They ensured its preservation as the Museo Histórico Municipal Amancio Alcorta. The larger house was also eventually donated to complete the complex.
The museum faced challenges. The 1966 civic-military dictatorship temporarily closed it. Valuable items were stored in a shed. Later restoration work began. Ocampo played a vital role in cleaning and organizing. He even salvaged the old gate from Moreno’s first Justice of the Peace court. This gate now serves as the museum’s entrance.
The museum finally opened in 1970. It contains two buildings beautiful gardens and a fountain. Nine exhibition halls display various artifacts. You’ll see objects from the Alcorta family’s personal lives. Documents from Moreno’s founding are preserved. Farming tools are showcased. Religious items and indigenous crafts are displayed. Fossils and ecological displays highlight the region’s natural history.
Explore the Alcorta Room. See pictures and portraits of the family. Their piano symbolizes their musical legacy. The People’s Room features everyday objects. Telephones and gramophones offer glimpses into daily life. The Paso del Rey Room houses a steam engine from a flour mill.
In the Worship Room paintings portraits and furniture illustrate religious practices. The Muñiz Room displays paleontological collections. This museum truly offers a comprehensive look at Moreno’s history and heritage. It has stood the test of time. It’s a place to discover Moreno’s fascinating story. A story waiting to be rediscovered by each visitor. This is the Museo Amancio Alcorta a true treasure.
