The Museo Aeronáutico y del Espacio FAE’s story began in April 1972. Major Pilot Galo Coronel Drouet gathered historical objects. He displayed them at the Cosme Rennella Aviation School. Later in August 1985 Brigadier Pilot Carlos Jaramillo A. envisioned a dedicated Museo Aeronáutico. It would be part of the FAE High Command. This ensured the preservation of aviation history. It also presented a documented view of the Ecuadorian Air Force.

The Museo Aeronáutico y del Espacio FAE officially opened on October 25 1986. Commander General Jorge Andrade C. inaugurated it. The location was the Mariscal Sucre Air Base 48. President León Febres Cordero supported the project. The museum aimed to showcase national and international aviation milestones. It collected objects documents and accounts. All based on scientific research.

The Museo Aeronáutico y del Espacio FAE features three main halls. They trace aviation history in Ecuador back to 1911. The first hall honors aviation pioneers. See photographs documents and three historic aircraft. The second hall explores the dream of flight. It showcases various cultures. The static park displays aircraft that once soared through Ecuadorian skies.

One notable aircraft is the biplane “Telégrafo 1”. It completed the first Guayaquil-Cuenca flight in 1920. This defied both weather and the Andes Mountains. This aircraft a star exhibit at the Museo Aeronáutico y del Espacio FAE. It is made of fabric and wood. The structure has a water-resistant resin coating. This Italian aircraft is one of about 50 planes in the museum’s collection.

See Alfonso Vásquez’s parachute. He was the first Ecuadorian to jump from 16100 feet. There are also vintage training planes. Aviator uniforms from 1920 are exhibited. Scale models of FAE aircraft are also on display. The Museo Aeronáutico y del Espacio FAE also features Teodoro Gildred’s monoplane. He flew it from San Diego to Quito in 1931. A collection of handmade model aircraft by Patricio Moreno is present too.

The Museo Aeronáutico y del Espacio FAE also highlights Ecuador’s early airlines. It acknowledges those who flew in Ecuadorian skies. The Ecuadorian Air Force gallery showcases aviation development. The museum spans 3000 square meters. Aviation pioneers Cosme Renella and Pedro Traversari are honored. In 1911 they formed the “Club Guayas de Tiro y Aviación”. This club trained pilots.

On October 27 1920 the Military Aviation School was created. It operated in Durán at “El Cóndor” airfield. The first Guayaquil-Cuenca flight marked a milestone. It was on November 4 of that year. Italians Elia Liut and Ferrucio Guicciardi piloted it. They flew the “Telégrafo 1” biplane. Abel Castillo owner of El Telégrafo newspaper bought it. He wanted to offer postal services. The flight lasted almost two hours. This plane is a main attraction at the Museo Aeronáutico y del Espacio. The Fuerza Aérea Ecuatoriana established it in 1986.

In the auditorium, you can discover scale models of aircraft. Also displayed are missiles and communication devices. Murals depict aviation history. They range from Icarus to space missions. A video about the FAE’s mission also is shown.

Displayed are a 1956 English Canberra bomber. A 1954 Meteor fighter-bomber and a T-33A fighter are also exhibited. There are also two 1965 Trojans. A 1960 American DC-6B with room for 60 passengers is present. Also explore an English AVRO an AT-6 a C-47 and a B-23. Two Cessna planes and a B-25J can be admired. A 1970 American PBY-Catalina seaplane stands out. A 1965 Chickasaw S-55 helicopter used for transport and rescue is also there.

The Museo Aeronáutico is a landing strip for aviation memories. These span from the “Telégrafo 1” to the K-FIR. Ecuador has been flying since 1911.
