Whispers of literary genius linger here at the Musée Ivan Tourguéniev. This museum is dedicated to the celebrated Russian novelist Ivan Tourguéniev. He spent the last nine years of his life in this very domaine.
Tourguéniev had a chalet built here. It was a mix of Russian and Swiss styles. He called it Datcha in reference to his homeland. It was within these walls that he penned some of his most important works. These included his novel “Terres vierges” and his “Poèmes en prose.”
In 1876, he also completed the Russian translation of Gustave Flaubert’s “La légende de Saint Julien l’Hospitalier” here. The house itself was constructed in 1874. It was part of the “Les Frênes” estate. This estate belonged to the Viardot family. Tourguéniev was very close to them.
He lived here with the singer Pauline Viardot. He had met her in Saint Petersburg. They maintained a close relationship for 40 years. It lasted until his death in 1883. You can also discover the Palladian villa of Pauline Viardot within the domaine.
Inside the Musée Ivan Tourguéniev, you will find personal objects that belonged to the artist. Among them are his piano and photos. You can also view his bedroom and writing room. Tourguéniev was an advocate against slavery and injustice. This museum offers a unique and informative visit. It is especially great for lovers of literature.
Many famous names in literature and the arts visited this house. These included Guy de Maupassant, George Sand, and Alexandre Dumas. Others were Maeterlinck, Chopin, Zola, and Sollogoub. The Datcha of Ivan Tourguéniev is part of the Route des Maisons d’Écrivains.
The modern town has changed the Seine riverbanks around the domaine. But the hill and house where Ivan Tourguéniev lived remain intact. Firs, cedars, and weeping beeches surround the two houses. They are set on the green slope that descends toward the river.
Interestingly, the domaine and buildings do not belong to the town of Bougival. They belong to the city of La Celle-Saint-Cloud.
