Firefighters mobilized to create, preserve, and restore a collection of 160 vehicles. There are over 3,000 pieces of firefighting equipment. These items date from modern to contemporary times. Since 2009 the Social and Cultural Animation Committee of SDIS du Rh\u00f4ne owns the collection.

The museum also serves as a memorial to the Feyzin disaster. A gas leak at the Feyzin refinery caused an explosion. Several propane storage spheres ignited. Eighteen people died and 82 were injured. Eleven firefighters from Lyon and Vienne lost their lives that day. The Mus\u00e9e des Sapeurs-Pompiers de Lyon preserves old firefighting equipment formerly stored in barracks.

The museum’s collection gained recognition as a Mus\u00e9e de France in 2005. This acknowledged its public interest and protected it. Restructuring took place. The exhibition space expanded to 1,200 m2. Agents of the Ministry of Culture now preserve and promote the collections.
