Before you, on Rue Maurice Denis, stands the Muséé départemental Maurice Denis. An old royal hospital transformed into a museum in 1976. Its doors opened in 1980. A haven for modernist art and Nabi paintings, many housed in the building’s chapel. The chapel, redecorated in 1928, served as a local church. Once a place of healing, this building is now a refuge for art, housing not only paintings, but its ornate furniture and stained-glass windows too. A little-known fact is that before Maurice Denis became its owner, he was a renter. He renamed the house “Le Prieur” but for twenty-three years, he was its tenant. After years of renovation, the museum reopened in September 2021. Now visitors can wander through a series of galleries showcasing a collection enriched with digital presentations, enabling a deeper and more stimulating experience.
