Imagine courageous aviators who volunteered for France in 1914. This is the spirit embodied at the Musée de l’Escadrille La Fayette. It stands as a memorial to their bravery.

The Musée de l’Escadrille La Fayette commemorates the American aviators of the Lafayette Squadron. They fought in our ranks from 1914. The memorial was built from 1926 to 1928 in the Domaine de Villeneuve. Alexandre Marcel, a government architect, designed it.

Early construction focused on land improvement. The Brezin Hospice was nearby and was torn down. The central area features a triumphant arch. Porticos flank it, leading to a subterranean crypt.

The Musée de l’Escadrille La Fayette’s art deco design highlights the aviators’ sacrifice. It also emphasizes the Franco-American friendship. Effigies of Lafayette and Washington face each other. A mosaic of the squadron’s Sioux head emblem lies on the ground.

Inside, the crypt holds the ashes of 66 American aviators. They are arranged chronologically by date of death. Thirteen stained glass windows depict major air battles of the war.

The monument was dedicated on July 4, 1928. Many dignitaries attended, including Marshal Foch and Paul Doumer. The Musée de l’Escadrille La Fayette hosts moving ceremonies each year. These ceremonies commemorate Memorial Day and November 11. They unite American and French military personnel and civilians.

Restoration began in 2002. The Ministry of Culture and the General Council mainly funded it. The scale of the work required additional funding. The American government provided a $2.1 million line of credit.

A new welcome center opened in the Parc de St Cloud on November 11. It tells the story of the Lafayette Squadron. The Musée de l’Escadrille La Fayette recounts the heroic adventures. 269 American pilots volunteered alongside France from 1914. The center displays aviator portraits. It traces the history of the Escadrille. It also covers aviation during World War I.

Visitors can admire an authentic aviator uniform. You can also see various objects, including a full-size Nieuport 17 plane. Guides at the Musée de l’Escadrille La Fayette welcome visitors daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They guide tours of the center and the crypt.

The Musée de l’Escadrille La Fayette stands as a testament. It honors courage and Franco-American friendship. Visiting here offers a powerful experience. It connects us to the past. It reminds us of shared values.
