“Can you hear the flutter of wings?” I ask, gesturing towards the Musée de la Colombophilie Militaire. It may seem an odd question here at the fortress of Mont-Valérien, but within these walls resides a fascinating piece of history, a story of airborne heroes. The Musée de la Colombophilie Militaire, established in 1981, isn’t just a museum; it’s a tribute to the feathered messengers of war. It celebrates the history of military pigeons, from antiquity to the modern era. Their service, particularly in the conflicts of the 20th century, is a testament to their incredible abilities. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 highlighted the pigeon’s vital role. During the siege of Paris, they were the only link to the outside world. Over 1,500 pigeons carried messages, demonstrating their resilience in harsh conditions. The invention of microphotography revolutionized their effectiveness, allowing numerous dispatches on a single film, projected upon arrival. This solidified their military value, leading to the creation of dedicated military lofts with rigorous breeding and training programs. World War I saw over 30,000 pigeons employed by the French army. One, nicknamed “Le Vaillant,” became a legend. In June 1916, as the last pigeon sent from Fort Vaux, he successfully carried Commandant Raynal’s final message through enemy lines, despite the bombardment and gas attacks. The message detailed the dire situation and the urgent need for relief. This brave act earned Le Vaillant the nation’s highest honors. The Musée de la Colombophilie Militaire even houses his preserved remains. During World War II, pigeons were again called to duty. Although the German advance disrupted operations, the Resistance relied on these feathered couriers. Over 16,500 English pigeons were parachuted into France, providing vital intelligence to London. These pigeons, trained in international competitions before the war, served their countries with distinction. The museum also houses the national military dovecote, the last active one in Europe. This legacy continues even today. While their role has diminished, a military loft with over 180 pigeons still exists here. It is attached to the 8th Transmission Regiment and participates in civilian competitions, keeping the tradition alive. The Musée de la Colombophilie Militaire offers a glimpse into this unique history, reminding us of these small, winged heroes who played a significant role in wartime communications.
