Nestled within the elegant 16th arrondissement of Paris, the Musée Arménien de France holds a remarkable story. It’s a story of resilience, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Armenian diaspora. The Musée Arménien de France began not in grand halls, but in the annexes of the Armenian Cathedral in 1949. Nourhan Fringhian, along with a group of Armenian friends, envisioned a space to preserve their rich cultural heritage. Their personal collections became the foundation of this unique museum. The museum later found a home within the Hôtel d’Ennery, sharing the space with the Musée d’Ennery. This location on Avenue Foch placed the Musée Arménien de France in the heart of Parisian culture. Imagine the contrast, a museum dedicated to Armenian art and archaeology, housed within a building showcasing Asian art. The Musée Arménien de France houses a treasure trove of Armenian art and history. From ancient ceramics and liturgical works to paintings by renowned Armenian artists, it offers a glimpse into 3,000 years of Armenian culture. Around 1,200 pieces tell tales of kingdoms and traditions. Some of these very artifacts were once showcased in the Louvre, highlighting their significance. Sadly, the Musée Arménien de France has faced challenges. It closed its doors to the public in 1995 due to necessary building renovations. The collection, however, continues to exist online. The museum’s website provides a virtual tour, ensuring the art remains accessible. While physical access is currently limited, the Musée Arménien de France continues its mission of preserving Armenian heritage. The hope remains that it will one day reopen its doors, allowing visitors to experience the richness of Armenian culture firsthand.
