Murray Park’s story starts in 1917. The City of Chicago bought this land. It was meant for the Southwest Water Tunnel’s construction. Almost ten years later in 1928, the city allowed park development. Murray Park officially opened in 1929.
Initially, there was a mix-up. Until 1930, it was incorrectly called Daniel L. Murray Park. The park truly honors David L. Murray. He was a respected local educator.
David L. Murray who was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1865, dedicated 54 years to the Chicago school board. He taught for years at Raster Elementary School. This school is near Murray Park, just three blocks away. Murray also served as Raster Elementary’s principal. He lived in West Englewood.
Murray Park offered much in its early days. There were playgrounds. Boys’ and girls’ playfields existed alongside a baseball field. An oval wading pool featured a wooden pergola border. A small recreation building included open shelter wings and a sand court.
In 1947, the recreation building’s open wings were enclosed. This created a year-round facility. New basketball courts and plantings arrived in 1966. The playground area was renovated 20 years later.
Today, Murray Park covers 3.49 acres. It features a multi-purpose clubroom. Outside, you’ll find a refurbished basketball court. A spray pool provides refreshing fun. There are baseball and softball diamonds. A playground invites children to play.
