Did the Murphy Windmill always stand so silent? No. In its heyday, the rhythmic whoosh of its sails and creak of its gears was a familiar sound at the western edge of Golden Gate Park. The Murphy Windmill, also known as the South Windmill, isn’t just a picturesque landmark. It’s a testament to San Francisco’s ingenuity and a symbol of a time when wind powered the city’s green spaces. Completed in 1908, the Murphy Windmill was a gift from banker Samuel G. Murphy. This wasn’t just any windmill. It was the largest of its kind in the world, capable of pumping an impressive 40,000 gallons of water a day. Imagine the sheer volume of water, drawn from the earth, sustaining the vibrant life of Golden Gate Park. The Murphy Windmill played a vital role in transforming the park’s sandy dunes into the lush oasis we know today. Before the windmill, San Francisco relied on the Spring Valley Water Company. This company was notorious for its exorbitant prices. The city struggled under the financial strain. The Murphy Windmill offered a solution, harnessing the free power of the Pacific winds to irrigate the park. It’s a curious fact that the Murphy Windmill’s sails rotate clockwise. This is opposite to the traditional counterclockwise rotation of Dutch windmills. This unique characteristic adds to the windmill’s distinctive charm. Sadly, progress, in the form of electric pumps, rendered the Murphy Windmill obsolete in 1913. The once-mighty structure fell into disrepair, its sails stilled, its gears rusted. By the 1950s, it stood in ruins, a forgotten giant. Yet, the story of the Murphy Windmill doesn’t end there. In the 1960s, a dedicated group of San Franciscans, led by Eleanor Rossi Crabtree, rallied to save this piece of history. The restoration process was long and arduous. It wasn’t until 2012 that the Murphy Windmill was finally restored to its former glory. Today, while no longer functionally pumping water, the Murphy Windmill stands proud. Its sails once again turn, albeit only on weekends and holidays, a tribute to the enduring spirit of San Francisco and a reminder of its resourceful past. The Murphy Windmill’s presence continues to inspire, a silent sentinel guarding the western edge of Golden Gate Park.
