The cornerstone whispers secrets. This is Murphy Road Baptist Church. A place of faith and community. For generations its doors have opened welcoming people from all walks of life.
Murphy Road Baptist Church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to unwavering faith. It stands as a beacon of hope. It’s a hub for spiritual growth and service. It began in 1900. A young Murphy housewife spearheaded its creation. She envisioned a Baptist church in Murphy. Her vision led to a small gathering in her living room.
The initial congregation included Mrs Mae Cockrell and some friends. G W McCall the pastor of FBC Plano was also involved. Bob Coleman publisher of the Plano Star Courier helped establish the church too. On September 4 1900 the church officially joined the Collin Baptist Association. Thirty-four members strong.
Their first building was modest. A single rectangular room. This room is still part of the church today. In 1921 the church boasted its largest membership ever. 296 members. The need for more space became apparent. Around 1924 wings were added. Bert George a local carpenter took on the task. The project cost a total of $5000.
For years the church held services only on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. They alternated with the Methodist church. In 1948 Murphy Road Baptist Church became a full-time church. In 1956 they added educational space. A baptistery kitchen restrooms a pastor’s study and new Sunday school rooms were added.
The church even moved. In 1979 the congregation voted to build a new church on South Murphy Road. A group of members reorganized as First Baptist Church of Murphy. They eventually moved their building to the current location. Don Hampton oversaw the move and renovation.
Murphy Road Baptist Church has a rich history. It has seen many faithful pastors. It has supported missionaries. It has played a vital role in the community.
