Doesn’t the name Muratpaşa have a nice ring? It is a charming neighborhood nestled within Istanbul’s Bayrampaşa district. Today we are exploring the wonders of Muratpaşa Mahallesi.

Muratpaşa is one of the eleven neighborhoods that make up Bayrampaşa. It is located on the European side of Istanbul. Imagine its borders meeting İsmetpaşa to the northwest and Kocatepe to the west. Then Kartaltepe and Yenidoğan to the southwest complete its embrace. Gaziosmanpaşa lies adjacent to the east.

Bayrampaşa became a district in 1990. Before that it was part of the Eyüp district. Interestingly before 1936 it was a part of Fatih district.

Back then this area was called Sağmalcılar. But in the 1970s a cholera outbreak changed everything. The water supply built by Mimar Sinan was polluted by new buildings and factories. It led to a quarantine. Sağmalcılar became synonymous with cholera. The district was renamed Bayrampaşa in honor of the 17th-century Ottoman grand vizier Bayram Pasha. Sadly little of Sinan’s original water system remains today.

But let us come back to Muratpaşa. The neighborhood is managed by a muhtar. The muhtar is like a local administrator. He is supported by the ihtiyar heyeti or council of elders. This system ensures local governance.

In 2023 the population of Muratpaşa was 33213. It occupies an area of just 0.81 square kilometers. This makes it a densely populated part of Istanbul.

Muratpaşa offers a unique glimpse into Istanbul life. It is a vibrant mix of residential and commercial activity. You will find daily life unfolding in its streets. People live work and interact creating a unique atmosphere.

Bayrampaşa is known for its artichokes. Although there is no production today its name is tied to a variety of artichoke. A large artichoke statue stands proudly in the district as its symbol.

The people of Bayrampaşa are mainly Albanians and Bosniaks. This mix of cultures adds to the area’s unique character. You will see this reflected in the local traditions and cuisine.

Muratpaşa is more than just a neighborhood. It is a living piece of Istanbul’s history. It is a testament to its resilience and cultural diversity. As you wander through its streets remember its story. Remember the cholera outbreak and the grand vizier.
