Is it possible that the biggest Municipality in Lebanon stands right before you? This is the Municipality of Ghobeiry. Ghobeiry is a municipality in the Baabda District of Mount Lebanon Governorate. It forms part of Beirut’s southern suburbs called Dahieh together with neighboring towns like Haret Hreik.
Ghobeiry’s history is marked by periods of conflict. In May 1988, it was a site of intense fighting between Amal and Hezbollah. Ghobeiry and Chiyah were the only Beirut districts that Amal retained control over, the rest of Southern Beirut coming under Hizbullah control.
More recently, Ghobeiry has been affected by Israeli airstrikes. In September 2024, an airstrike targeted the Ghobeiry neighborhood. The attack hit a residential building destroying three floors and causing casualties. The mayor of Ghobeiry, Maan Al-Khalil, condemned these attacks. He emphasized the resolve to rebuild.
The municipality has also faced other Israeli offensives. Strikes were reported in Ghobeiry and other areas. These strikes have caused extensive damage to residential buildings and vital infrastructure. Despite these challenges, the community remains steadfast.
Ghobeiry is home to a diverse population. In 2014, Muslims made up 99.41% of registered voters. Shiite Muslims accounted for 79.14% and Sunni Muslims 20.26%.
The Municipality of Ghobeiry covers a total area of 120 hectares. That is equivalent to about 300 acres. It sits at an elevation of 50 meters, approximately 160 feet. Ghobeiry plays a vital role in the Dahieh region.
