A whirlwind of activity surrounds Munich East Station. This isn’t just any station. It’s a vital artery pumping life into Munich’s east side. Opened in 1871 as Haidhausen Station it quickly became a crucial railway hub.
Initially named Haidhausen after the local district Munich East Station gained its current name in 1876. Its significance soared with the 1898 addition of the Munich East-Deisenhofen line. Electrification arrived in 1927 a testament to technological advancement.
The Second World War left its mark. Bombing raids in 1944 severely damaged the station requiring complete reconstruction. A temporary hall served passengers until the modern building rose in 1985. Three years later the U-Bahn joined the network enhancing connectivity.
Today Munich East Station boasts 17 tracks a testament to its capacity. S-Bahn services utilize tracks 1-5. Regional and interregional trains use tracks 6-8 and 11-14. Tracks 9 10 and 15 are through tracks. Motorail services occupy tracks 16 and 17.
From Munich East Station you can catch InterCity EuroCity and Railjet services. These trains connect Munich to Salzburg Innsbruck Italy and Southeastern Europe. ICE services to Vienna and Innsbruck also stop here. Regional-Express and Regionalbahn services radiate outwards serving Chiemgau and southeastern Bavaria. These are operated by SüdostBayernBahn and Bayerische Regiobahn.
The station’s S-Bahn section was renovated under the Takt 10 project. This improved efficiency. Lines S2 S4 S6 and S8 proceed east from platform 5. Lines S3 and S7 reverse at platform 4 heading south to Giesing. Trains to the tunnel depart from platforms 1-3.
Since 1988 U-Bahn line U5 connects to the station. It runs south to Neuperlach Süd and west to Laimer Platz. Tram route 21 also stops at Orleansplatz in front of the station.
