Have you ever heard of Mulgrave District? It’s a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located about 21 km south-east of the city’s central bustling district. The district is known now for its large shopping center, traffic reports on Jacksons Road, and the home of the Premier of Victoria. Mulgrave District was a parish surveyed in 1853, and became a Shire of Oakleigh and Mulgrave in 1857. Mulgrave was given its name by the surveyor, who used Mulgrave Castle in England as his inspiration. The Earl of Mulgrave, the inspiration for the name, was a man who served as the Governor of Victoria. Later, the Shire was renamed to Mulgrave in 1897. The Shire remained relatively unchanged until 1949, when some land was transferred to Oakleigh City. In 1955, the Shire was renamed again, becoming the City of Waverley in 1961. Today, the name of the suburban area is Mulgrave District, but there is no longer a Shire or City of Mulgrave. The Mulgrave District is home to many families and is known for its charming atmosphere and strong sense of community.
