Muka Head Lighthouse

Atop a hill stands Muka Head Lighthouse a beacon for sailors. Built in 1883 by the British this 14-meter tall structure is more than just a light. It’s a testament to Penang’s rich maritime past. Muka Head Lighthouse sits proudly at the northwestern tip of Penang Island. It perches atop a 227-meter hill in Penang National Park. Reaching it requires a trek from Monkey Beach a journey that takes around 30 to 60 minutes depending on your fitness. The climb is initially steep but eventually narrows to a jungle trail. The lighthouse itself cost a hefty £37,929 in 1883 a significant sum back then. This was a time of economic boom in Penang thanks to tin mining and the growing use of steamships. Muka Head Lighthouse played a crucial role guiding ships navigating the Straits of Malacca and the Andaman Sea. Its light was visible for 25 nautical miles. The lighthouse is more than just a tower. At its base are the offices of the Jabatan Laut and the caretaker’s living quarters. A cast-iron spiral staircase leads to the lantern room. Inside you’ll find multiple lamps surrounded by parabolic reflectors to maximize the light’s reach. When active the mechanism rotates sending a sweeping beam across the sea. From the top the views are breathtaking. You can see Penang National Park the surrounding sea and Pantai Kerachut. Remember Muka Head Lighthouse is open from 9 am to 3 pm.
