The rhythmic churn of water against stone whispers secrets. This is the Holzlarer Mühle. More than 500 years old this mill stands as a testament to Bonn’s rich history.

Picture this. The year is 1502. The mill and its accompanying mill pond belong to a grand Burghof. These are then inherited by Wilhelm von Nesselrode the Landdrost. Tragically war tears through the 16th century. Both the Burghof and the Mühle are destroyed.

Fast forward to the mid-19th century. The Reuter family acquires the rebuilt mill from the Count von Nesselrode. They become its caretakers. Generations of Reutes tend to the mill. The rhythmic turning of the millstones sounds through the ages. Then in the 1950s the last miller Josef Reuter closes the mill. Silence settles.

But the story doesn’t end there. The Holzlarer Mühle is special. It is Bonn’s only functioning historical watermill. The community recognizes its value. In 1988 it receives landmark status. A dedicated group forms the Holzlarer Mühle e V. They ensure the Mühle’s survival. Their tireless efforts bring the mill back to life. The water wheel turns once more.

Today the Holzlarer Mühle is more than a mill. It is a living museum. It showcases the skills and culture of our ancestors. It’s an idyllic spot. Set in a residential area it is a beloved community hub. Visitors flock to see it. They witness the techniques of the past. The Mühle hosts numerous events. From children’s reading afternoons to an annual Christmas market. The air hums with activity. The water wheel’s rhythm continues. It tells the ongoing story of the Holzlarer Mühle. A story of resilience. Of community spirit. And of a precious piece of history that continues to turn.
