Sabanc\u0131 University was established in 1994. It’s the brainchild of the Sabanc\u0131 Group. The university adopted a liberal arts education approach. Its campus spans 1.26 million square meters. That is about 40 km from Istanbul’s city center.
The first students arrived in 1999. Sabanc\u0131 University has three faculties. These are the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. There is also the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Finally, there is the Sabanc\u0131 Business School. A language school supports them. Here at the M\u00fchendislik ve Do\u011fa Bilimleri Fak\u00fcltesi students explore various disciplines.
All students take the English Language Assessment Exam. Some students require additional language support. They enroll in the Foundations Development Year. This program focuses on English and Turkish language courses. Students develop proficiency for university coursework. Those who pass the ELAE start as freshmen. Every student takes University Courses. This is the core undergraduate curriculum.
The curriculum links natural and social sciences. It also connects other disciplines. Freshmen study humanity and society. They also study the principles of Atat\u00fcrk and Turkish history. Students study Turkish language and literature. The curriculum includes the science of nature. Mathematical functions are also studied. An interfaculty course covers computational problem-solving. Academic literacies are also part of it. Sophomores take “Major Works” courses. These courses explore significant literary and artistic works. Juniors or seniors study law and ethics. It examines law and ethics in everyday dilemmas.
Sabanc\u0131 University emphasizes research. The Research Process Planning and Policy Development Office plays a role. There is also the Research Project Development Office. University-industry partnerships are fostered. The European Enterprise Network Istanbul is involved. The university also has an incubation center. It is called Inovent A.\u015e.
The Sabanc\u0131 University Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Research and Application Center was founded in 2016. It offers lab tests and prototype manufacturing. Design and simulation services are also provided. They work with composite materials. The center provides consultancy and training. They serve governmental organizations and industry corporations.
The Nanotechnology Research and Application Center started in 2011. It has a team of faculty members and researchers. They develop applications for various industries. These include electronics and healthcare.
Istanbul Policy Center focuses on social and political issues. These include democratization and climate change. They research transatlantic relations. The center addresses conflict resolution.
