Who was Muhammed El-Ensari? Here at the Muhammed El-Ensari Türbesi, his story unfolds. This tomb, situated along the Haliç coastal road in Istanbul’s Fatih district, holds the remains of a warrior who journeyed from Medina to join the Arab campaign during the conquest of Istanbul. He died during this campaign, and this türbe marks his final resting place. Muhammed El-Ensari was a companion of Ebu Eyyub el-Ensari. The area around the Muhammed El-Ensari Türbesi is known by several names: “Babul Ensari,” “Ensar Dede,” and “Parmakkapı”. The tomb took its present form during the reign of Mahmud II. Look closely at the entrance gate. You’ll see Mahmud II’s tughra, a calligraphic monogram, adorning it. The türbe itself is constructed from cut Küfeki stone, and the interior is covered with plaster. Right beside the Muhammed El-Ensari Türbesi stands the Hatice Sultan Sıbyan Mektebi, a primary school. This proximity adds another layer to the historical significance of this site, a place where both remembrance and education have found a home.
