“Mill stream.” That’s what the Slavic word “zornice” means. It might not sound like much. But it whispers a secret about the Müglitz. This river is more than just a waterway. It is a thread woven through time.

The Müglitz rises in the Eastern Ore Mountains. It marks the border between Saxony and the Czech Republic. Imagine two headstreams merging. The White Müglitz flows near a former village. The Black Müglitz rises near an abandoned one. These waters join together. They create the river we see today.

For about 49 kilometers the Müglitz carves its path. It passes through villages like Lauenstein and Glashütte. Finally, it empties into the Elbe at Heidenau.

The Black Müglitz has another name too. It is also known as the Sörnitz. This name hints at its past. The “Schwarzen Wiesen” or Black Meadows surround its middle reaches. The dark color comes from the boggy land.

The Müglitz wasn’t always so gentle. In 1927 severe weather transformed the stream. It became a raging torrent. The water tore up the ground. It changed its riverbed. It flowed down the valley as a destructive mud flow.

The river also served as a border. The Black Müglitz marked the state line for about 2 kilometers. This was near its source in the Haberfeld Forest. From the village of Müglitz, the river runs entirely on Saxon territory.

Today, the Müglitz may seem like a peaceful stream. But remember its history. Remember the floods and the borders it has marked. The Müglitz is a testament to the power of nature. It also serves as a marker for the passage of time.
