Gazing across the bustling waters of Puerto Nuevo, we find ourselves at the Muelle Dársena E Cabecera. This quay, nestled within the intricate network of Buenos Aires’ port system, holds a unique place in the city’s maritime story. Muelle Dársena E Cabecera isn’t just a dock. It’s a testament to the evolution of Buenos Aires’ ambitious port project.

Muelle Dársena E Cabecera sits within Puerto Nuevo (New Port), a section of the port distinguished by its six dársenas (docks). Five of these, named A through E, cater to overseas vessels. The sixth, Dársena F, serves coastal trade. These dársenas, separated by protective breakwaters, form a sheltered haven for ships arriving from across the globe. A key feature of Puerto Nuevo’s design is the breakwater that protects these docks. This breakwater extends in a 350-degree direction, shielding the ships from the open waters. However, there’s a deliberate interruption in this barrier, a 145-meter wide entrance located between Dársenas D and E. This allows vessels approaching from the north, via the coastal channel, to enter the port with ease.

Muelle Dársena E Cabecera was originally part of Terminal 6. This terminal encompassed a significant portion of the port, including parts of the fifth and sixth breakwaters. It also included the head of Dársena E and the northeastern side of Dársena F. The total muelle length for this terminal was an impressive 1105 meters. However, Terminal 6 has since become inactive.

The entire Buenos Aires port area is divided into distinct sections: Puerto Nuevo, Puerto Madero, Dársena Sur, and Dock Sud. Puerto Nuevo, with Muelle Dársena E Cabecera, plays a crucial role in handling a substantial portion of Argentina’s overseas trade. The port has a remarkable capacity, handling over 800,000 TEUs annually through its various terminals.

As we stand here, at Muelle Dársena E Cabecera, imagine the activity that once thrived along this quay. Picture the towering cranes loading and unloading cargo. Hear the rumble of machinery and the shouts of dockworkers as ships from distant lands arrived. Although Terminal 6 is no longer operational, Muelle Dársena E Cabecera remains a tangible link to the past, a silent witness to the ebb and flow of Buenos Aires’ maritime history. The story of this quay is a small, but important, part of the larger narrative of Buenos Aires’ rise as a global port city.
