Muelle 6to Espigón stands proudly within the bustling Puerto de Buenos Aires. This port is a vital hub for Argentina’s trade and maritime activities. Buenos Aires handles about 70% of the country’s container traffic. More than 60 shipping companies operate here. The port is divided into several terminals and docks. Each has a specific function. Muelle 6to Espigón plays its own important role.

The strategic location of Muelle 6to Espigón is key. Buenos Aires lies at latitude 34° 36′ 45″ south and longitude 38° 22′ 03″ west. Access to the port is via a network of dredged channels extending over 200 km. These channels include Canal Norte and Canal Punta Indio. They ensure safe passage for ships.

Puerto Nuevo includes several docks labeled A through F. These docks are separated by piers. Muelle 6to Espigón is strategically positioned. It is near the end of the escollera or breakwater. The breakwater protects the port from harsh weather. The escollera has a break. It allows ships to enter from the north via the coastal channel.

Specific terminals operate near Muelle 6to Espigón. Terminal 5 is operated by Buenos Aires Container Terminal Services. This terminal has an aggressive development plan. It offers a range of services to shipping companies.

Originally Terminal 6 was a sub-product loading dock. It received and shipped agricultural products. Terminal 6 is currently undergoing conversion. This includes new areas for port expansion.

In 2019, a project was initiated. This was to modernize the port. It adapted infrastructure for larger ships and container traffic. This included constructing continuous quays over 800 meters long. These quays can efficiently handle multiple New Panamax vessels at once.

The project aimed to consolidate cargo activity in the north. It freed space in the south for passenger services. The area north of Muelle 6to Espigón was to become a new container terminal. It was called Terminal Exterior.
