In 1884, a group of Norwegian Lutherans, yearning for a spiritual home of their own, formed Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. They were a daughter congregation of Our Savior’s Church. Initially, Mt. Zion Lutheran Church held services in a rented hall and even shared the “German church” before establishing a permanent home. Their first church building, erected in 1887 at Sixth Street and Twenty-fourth Avenue, was a testament to their growing community. Mt. Zion Lutheran Church continued to expand. By 1910, they constructed a magnificent red brick edifice at 25th Avenue North and Lyndale. This impressive structure stood as one of the twelve largest churches within the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America Synod. Over the decades, Mt. Zion Lutheran Church served as a spiritual anchor for the Norwegian community and beyond. In 2002, Mt. Zion Lutheran Church merged with Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church. This union created River of Life Church. The original Mt. Zion Lutheran Church building was then sold. The building continued to serve as a place of worship for other congregations. In 2012, it housed the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, and by 2021, Iglesia Vino Nuevo MN called it home.
