“Ever been to a concert where the energy crackles in the air?” That’s the everyday vibe at Movistar Arena. This multiuse indoor arena stands proudly in the Villa Crespo neighborhood. It is a beacon for entertainment in Buenos Aires.
Movistar Arena has a seating capacity of 15,000. It is more than just a venue. It’s a modern marvel that replaced the DirecTV Arena in 2019. The arena sits on land that once belonged to the Atlético Atlanta club.
But here’s a twist. The club had to sell the land due to bankruptcy in 1991. The city government later stepped in. They re-concessioned it back to the football club. Construction of the stadium started in 2014. But insufficient funds caused a halt in 2015. The half-finished structure sat abandoned. Then, in 2017, Buenos Aires Arena S.A. revived the project.
To ensure top-notch service, ASM Global was contracted as its operator. Telefónica’s cell phone division, Movistar, acquired the naming rights. This agreement extends all the way to 2057. So, the name is here to stay.
The grand opening on November 1, 2019, was unforgettable. Tini Stoessel inaugurated the arena. She performed as part of her Quiero Volver Tour. Special guests Karina and Luis Fonsi joined her on stage. The concert was broadcast live on multiple platforms. These included Movistar Play and TNcom.
Movistar Arena is conveniently located near major avenues. Avenida Corrientes, Avenida Dorrego, and Avenida Juan B. Justo are all close. Public transportation is readily available. The Urquiza Line at Federico Lacroze station is nearby. The Line B subway at Dorrego station is also an option. Numerous bus lines connect the city to the arena. The EcoBici bike-sharing system offers another way to get here.
Since its opening, Movistar Arena has hosted a wide array of performers. Tini, Chayanne, and Abel Pintos have graced its stage. International acts like Keane, Shawn Mendes, and J Balvin have also performed here. The diverse lineup continues with names like Ricky Martin and Miranda. Even legends like Joan Manuel Serrat have played here.
But the arena isn’t just about music. It also hosts other events. These include freestyle master series and digital festivals. Even Halloween specials have been held here.
Fun fact. Florencia Bertotti holds the record for most tickets sold at Movistar Arena. She sold out 12 dates in less than ten hours. This surpasses even Emilia Mernes.
