Moutran Elias Audi church stands as a testament to Metropolitan Elias Audi’s enduring legacy. Born in 1941 in Anfeh El-Koura, north Lebanon, Elias Audi’s journey led him to become the Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Beirut. He assumed this role in 1980.
Before becoming Metropolitan, Elias Audi pursued theological studies. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology from St. Vladimir Theological Seminary in New York in 1969. He was ordained to the priesthood that same year.
In 1971, Elias Audi became the Assistant Dean at the St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology. In 1979, he assisted Patriarch Ignatius IV in Damascus. Later that year, he was elected bishop as the Patriarchal Vicar. The Holy Council of the Church of Antioch elected him metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Beirut on February 5, 1980. His enthronement took place on April 9.
During his service, Metropolitan Elias Audi actively participated in various councils. These included the Council of Middle East Churches and the World Council of Churches. He also served on the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches. He even chaired the Joint Dialogue Committee between the Vatican and the World Council of Churches.
Metropolitan Elias Audi has played a crucial role in restoring churches damaged by war. Notably, he oversaw the restoration of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George in Beirut. It reopened in 2003. This reflected his commitment to rebuilding communities.
In times of crisis, Elias Audi has been a voice of reason and compassion. In 2001, he joined a World Council of Churches delegation to express solidarity after the September 11 attacks. In 2002, he launched a development project for Saint George Hospital University Medical Center. The project aimed to create a trauma center and a children’s hospital.
