Gazing at Mountain Lake’s tranquil surface, can you imagine an alligator lurking beneath? It’s true. This seemingly peaceful oasis in San Francisco’s Richmond District, nestled between Lake and Funston, holds a surprising secret. Mountain Lake, one of the last natural lakes within San Francisco, was once home to a gator. Let’s rewind to 1996. A birdwatcher, Dan Bushnell, first spotted the three-foot reptile. News of the “Golden Gator,” as it was affectionately nicknamed, spread like wildfire. The Chronicle and Examiner engaged in a media frenzy. They even flew in a professional alligator hunter from Florida. The hunter, armed with gator lures and his father’s calls, spent three days searching. Yet, the gator remained elusive. Finally, in October, zookeepers captured the Golden Gator. He resided at the San Francisco Zoo before being relocated to a Louisiana bayou. But Mountain Lake’s history goes far beyond this reptilian resident. Long before the gator’s arrival, Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza camped here in 1776. He even selected a nearby site for the Spanish presidio. A plaque near the lake commemorates this historical event. Mountain Lake has witnessed significant changes over time. The construction of Park Presidio Boulevard directly impacted its western shore, shrinking its size. Runoff from the highway, pesticides from the nearby golf course, and lead emissions further degraded its water quality. The lake also became a dumping ground for unwanted pets: crawdads, bass, goldfish, bullfrogs, and turtles. Despite these challenges, Mountain Lake perseveres. It’s a testament to nature’s resilience. Today, thanks to restoration efforts, the lake and the surrounding park offer a welcome respite. Native plants flourish along its banks. Birds, including California seagulls and ducks, grace the water’s surface. And if you look closely, you might even spot a western pond turtle or a chorus frog. Mountain Lake isn’t just a body of water. It’s a living story. A story of exploration, environmental challenges, and a resilient ecosystem that continues to thrive.
