Pastor Fred Campbell’s legacy echoes within the walls of Mount Zion Baptist Church. He served this very church, Mount Zion Baptist Church, for over 38 years. That’s one of the longest pastoral tenures in the entire San Francisco Bay Area. His leadership guided countless individuals toward spiritual growth. Pastor Campbell championed many causes during his time at Mount Zion Baptist Church. These included discipleship, faith at home, and education. He also focused on empowering men within the community. His sermons were known for their biblical depth, infused with humor, and his personable nature made him beloved by the congregation of Mount Zion Baptist Church. He led Mount Zion Baptist Church with the vision of every member growing in their relationship with Jesus. He also strived for the maturity of the Body of Christ. Beyond the walls of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Pastor Campbell has been a trailblazing leader on a national scale. He served in various positions within the California State Baptist Convention. These roles included Financial Secretary, Director of Christian Education, and Congress of Christian Education President. In 2002, he became President of the California State Baptist Convention. His mantra was “Building Health Churches.” He aimed to make the convention a valuable resource for local churches like Mount Zion Baptist Church. His service extended to the National Baptist Convention. He served as Historian under the Shaw administration. He was an at-large board member under the Scruggs administration. Later, he served as Chairman of the Board under the Young Administration. Pastor Campbell’s dedication also reached pastors and their wives across the nation. He offered wise counsel and support. In 2001, he and his wife Joyce founded Shepherd’s Tent Ministries. This ministry is dedicated to supporting pastors and their wives. It now hosts the Word Conference. This conference has become a premier event on the West Coast, promoting biblical education and literacy. Pastor Campbell’s educational background includes California Baptist University in Riverside and Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley. He and his wife Joyce were married for over 49 years before her passing in 2011. They had six children and five grandchildren.
