A haven of remembrance rests before us. This is Mount Sinai Memorial Park. Established in 1953 it’s more than just a cemetery. Mount Sinai Memorial Park is a significant landmark in Los Angeles. It holds a special place in the hearts of many.

Initially part of Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills it became exclusively Jewish in 1959. In 1967 Sinai Temple acquired it. Sinai Temple is the oldest and largest Conservative synagogue in Los Angeles. The park serves the entire Jewish community. It’s a beautiful park-like setting. Many notable figures from the entertainment industry are buried here.

Mount Sinai Memorial Park isn’t merely a place of burial. It’s a living testament to Jewish heritage. Walk among the mosaics sculptures fountains and carvings. The art enriches the landscape. It connects people to their roots.

The Heritage Mosaic is breathtaking. Measuring 145 by 30 feet it depicts the Jewish American experience. Over 2.5 million pieces of hand-cut Venetian glass tell a story. The story begins with early Jewish settlers in 1654. It continues to the founding of Israel. This magnificent work is not only beautiful. It’s an educational tool.

Another powerful feature is the Warsaw Ghetto Memorial. Created by Bernard Zakheim it commemorates the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. Six figures made of burnt wood represent victims and heroes. Yom HaShoah commemorations feature candle lighting. The eternal flame symbolizes resilience and rebirth.

Mount Sinai Memorial Park also houses a reproduction of the Bet Alpha Synagogue Mosaic. This 6th-century mosaic is five times its original size. It’s a remarkable piece of Jewish art. It showcases the artistry of the Byzantine period. The 12 signs of the Zodiac surround a central feature.

The park expanded in 1997 opening Mount Sinai Simi Valley. In 2024 the Simi Valley location became a certified green burial site. This reflects a growing desire for environmentally conscious burials. The natural burial area uses biodegradable materials and native plants.

Mount Sinai Memorial Park offers a Genizah program. This ancient tradition allows for the respectful burial of worn sacred texts. School groups participate in burial services learning about this important practice.
