Is it possible for a church to have a “mountain top experience”? At Mount Sinai Community Baptist Church in Dallas, it seems like a promise. Mount Sinai Community Baptist Church wasn’t always located here. It was first established on June 21, 1971, by a group of devout Christians gathered at Judea Baptist Church. The late Dr. U.S. Cornelius, their first pastor, suggested the name “Mount Sinai Baptist Church.” Imagine the scene on February 14, 1993. The congregation, led by their late pastor, marched with joyful hearts into their new home on Lake June Road, celebrating the culmination of prayers and hard work. But life, like faith, is tested. Tragedy struck on August 11, 1999, with the passing of Dr. Cornelius, the very heart of their community. A search committee was formed, and after careful consideration and prayer, they unanimously called upon Dr. Stephen L. Jones. Dr. Jones accepted the call on October 8, 2000, becoming a beacon of hope in a time of mourning. And in an inspiring display of unity and faith, the church, under Dr. Jones’ leadership, paid off their mortgage on April 21, 2002, marking the occasion with a symbolic Mortgage Burning Service. Today, Mount Sinai Community Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, resilience, and community.
