Have you ever felt the ancient pulse of a volcano beneath your feet? Mount Richmond in Otahuhu is more than just a hill. It’s a living testament to Auckland’s volcanic past and Maori heritage.

Mount Richmond isn’t just any peak. It’s a 48-meter-high volcanic cone. Two craters mark its summit. These craters are each 50 meters wide. This impressive landmark is one of Auckland’s 14 Tūpuna Maunga ancestral mountains. It’s a place of deep cultural significance.

Imagine the 14th century. The Tainui waka canoes landed here. Otahuhu was a vital portage. The narrow isthmus between Manukau Harbour and the Tamaki River made it so. Mount Richmond became a fortified pa. Maori people lived there. They built terraces and dug kumara pits. These are still visible today. They are remnants of a vibrant past.

Later European settlers arrived. They called it Mount Halswell. The area became a strategically important military settlement. Fencible soldiers occupied Otahuhu. Mount Richmond offered them a commanding view. It helped to protect against attacks. The mountain was also a vital resource. Rock from Mount Richmond built roads to other settlements.

The mountain’s importance continued to grow. In the 1870s the Otahuhu Highway Board declared Mount Richmond a reserve. It was later passed to the Otahuhu Borough Council. Eventually it fell under the jurisdiction of Auckland Council.

A significant change came in 2014. A Treaty of Waitangi settlement returned ownership to Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau. This collective of thirteen Auckland iwi and hapū now manages Mount Richmond. They ensure that its history and significance are preserved.

Today Mount Richmond stands as a symbol of this rich heritage. It’s a place where past and present intertwine. The mountain provides spectacular views. You can enjoy them while walking its trails. It’s a place where you can connect with nature and history. It’s a must-see destination on your Auckland adventure.
