Over 142000 souls rest here. Welcome to Mount Olivet Cemetery.

This sprawling 93-acre expanse is more than just a resting place. It’s a living testament to Chicago’s rich history. Established in 1885 Mount Olivet was the first Catholic cemetery on the city’s South Side. Archbishop Patrick Feehan secured the land. He paid $40000. Fifteen thousand people attended the consecration ceremony.

Think of the stories these headstones hold. They speak of families. They tell of lives lived and dreams pursued. One notable resident was Al Capone. Initially buried here between his father and brother. His remains later moved to Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Imagine the scene in 1885. A vast open field transformed into a sacred space. Slowly filled with the markers of lives lived. Each stone a unique story. Each plot a family history. The cemetery grew rapidly. It became full. More land was purchased to expand the grounds eastward.

Among the many buried here are several notable figures. Congressmen like Thomas A Doyle. Lawrence E McGann. M Alfred Michaelson and P H Moynihan. Even Catherine O’Leary. The woman whose cow allegedly started the Great Chicago Fire. She too found her final resting place here. A single British Commonwealth war grave honors a Canadian soldier from World War I. Adding to the stories held within these grounds.

Mount Olivet is a place of quiet reflection. A space to remember those who came before us. It’s a glimpse into Chicago’s past. A journey through time marked by the lives it holds. A silent city of stories etched in stone. Take a moment. Let the history soak in. The weight of the years. The whispers of the past. Mount Olivet Cemetery waits.
