What would it have been like to be one of those five inspired Christians who gathered in 1923 to establish Mount Nebo Baptist Church? Imagine their hopes and dreams as they laid the foundation for a community of faith that would thrive for over a century. Mount Nebo Baptist Church, first established as a mission, held its inaugural service on April 12, 1924, under the leadership of Reverend J.D. Davis, their first pastor. The church, like its congregation, grew, leading to the construction of a new building in 1931 on Tupelo Street. This wouldn’t be the last time the congregation would have to build a new structure to accommodate its growing numbers. In 1972, under the leadership of Reverend Fred B. Black, the church celebrated the dedication of a new building on Tunica Street. Sadly, Pastor Black, much like Moses denied entry to the promised land, couldn’t attend the dedication due to his declining health and passed away shortly after in May of 1972. Despite this loss, the spirit of Mount Nebo continued to burn brightly. The church didn’t just serve as a place of worship. It became a pillar of the community, actively participating in the civil rights movement. It became a haven during turbulent times, hosting one of Mississippi’s 41 freedom schools in 1964, shining a light on the racial disparities in the education system and advocating for voter education. This commitment to social justice is still evident today, as Mount Nebo hosts the Jackson chapter of the NAACP meetings and champions equality for everyone. From those five founding members to the bustling community it serves today, Mount Nebo Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the importance of social responsibility.
