Have you ever heard of Mount Juliet? It may not be a household name like Mount Kosciuszko, but for those who love a challenge, this peak in the Yarra Ranges is a legend. Here we stand at the trailhead, surrounded by a serene temperate rainforest. It is a truly beautiful spot, a perfect spot to start your adventure, or to take a deep breath before beginning your climb.
Mount Juliet is the name of the peak, a trigonometric cairn built in the late 1800s, marking a geodetic survey point. The trail takes you up to a unique summit, a challenging climb with a steep incline, almost like a giant staircase. It was originally a popular training ground for hikers.
The track starts from Road Three, taking you east for about 2 km before you reach the junction of an incomplete 4WD track. It’s a tough slog with a total ascent of around 913 meters. The summit is at 1120 meters, the highest point in the area. The summit is a stunning location, but due to the devastating 1939 bushfires, there’s no view. There are only mature trees blocking the view.
Once you reach the top, you can see the stone cairn, the only reward for braving the steep climb and the overgrown trails. It’s like a beacon, marking the culmination of your arduous journey. But despite the lack of panoramic views, the feeling of accomplishment is overwhelming.
This region is a hiker’s paradise, home to the world’s tallest flowering tree, the Mountain Ash. It stands at around 1110 meters, making it a truly incredible sight. The towering trees, lush ferns, and mossy Myrtle Beech provide a stunning backdrop for your unforgettable climb. But remember to stay safe, prepare well, and enjoy the journey. Mount Juliet will test your limits, but the sense of achievement at the top is truly unmatched.
