Can a church be born from a simple act of kindness? At the Mount Hebron Baptist Church, the answer is a resounding yes. This church, right here before us, stands as a testament to the power of community and faith. Mount Hebron Baptist Church wasn’t always this grand structure. Its story began humbly in 1926 as a small mission circle. A group of young people, calling themselves the “Gospel Relief Workers,” sought to alleviate the suffering of the poor. Their main goal was to gather funds to help those in need. In 1929, Reverend J. P. Ezell from South Carolina joined their cause. He envisioned a larger organization. He started recruiting children, believing they held the key to reaching their families. His strategy worked, and the group grew, solidifying into a church in 1930. The first Mount Hebron Baptist Church stood at 1829 West Taylor Street, a far cry from where we stand today. The church’s early leaders, including John Carter and Donnie Fields, laid the groundwork for the church’s future. Their dedication is honored even now, with the lower auditorium dedicated to Deacon Carter’s memory. The church thrived and moved several times, first to 1857 West Roosevelt and later to 2049 West Roosevelt Road. In 1941, Reverend Joshua Napoleon Wordlaw took the helm, leading the church through a period of growth and prosperity. A significant moment came in 1957 when Mount Hebron Baptist Church acquired the property on Douglas Boulevard, where it stands today. The original building, located at 3453 West Douglas Boulevard, was later replaced by the structure we see now. In 1983, the old building was deemed unsafe. The congregation temporarily held services at the Lawndale Interracial Baptist Church while a new church was built. In 1984, they triumphantly marched into the current Mount Hebron Baptist Church at 3447 West Douglas Boulevard. Following Reverend Wordlaw’s death in 1991, the church experienced a period of transition and change. Several pastors led the congregation before the arrival of Pastor Lloyd L. Keith in 2000. Pastor Keith was chosen in a unanimous vote, a testament to the unity and hope he brought to the congregation. From a small mission circle to a thriving church, Mount Hebron Baptist Church continues to serve its community. It stands as a beacon of faith, a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can blossom into something truly extraordinary.
