Mount Greenwood itself, located about 14 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, began as a quiet agricultural area in the mid-19th century. It blossomed into a suburban haven, drawing families seeking a peaceful life away from the city’s hustle. The growth spurt from the 1930s to the 1950s shaped Mount Greenwood into a place with a distinct character. Many Chicago firefighters, police officers, and union workers call this place home. This contributes to the close-knit, community-focused atmosphere that permeates Mount Greenwood, a characteristic that is reflected in the Mount Greenwood Church of the Nazarene. The church itself is part of a larger story, the story of the Church of the Nazarene, a denomination born from a desire to emphasize a life of holiness and spiritual renewal within Christianity. The Church of the Nazarene didn’t break away from Methodism. Rather, people from diverse denominations united to form this new movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among these, many early leaders did have Methodist roots. Phineas F. Bresee, a key figure in the church’s early days, was a Methodist pastor. He established the first congregation using the name “Church of the Nazarene” in Los Angeles. Today, the Mount Greenwood Church of the Nazarene stands as a testament to this history. It shares the same commitment to community and spiritual growth that defines both Mount Greenwood and the Church of the Nazarene globally.
