From the summit of Mount Atkinson, the world stretches out before you. This isn’t just any hill; it’s a monument to a man named Henry Atkinson. Mount Atkinson offers breathtaking views of Titirangi Village and the shimmering waters of the Manukau and Waitemata Harbours. Located on the foothills of Titirangi, the journey to the top is a short, scenic bush walk. You can access Mount Atkinson from 22 Kohu Road in Titirangi. For those up for a bit more of a trek, it’s about a 45-minute walk from Kiwi Heritage Homestay. Afterwards, you can reward yourself with refreshments at one of the charming cafes in Titirangi Village. You might even try the Mt Atkinson coffee at Vevo Cafe. At the top of Mount Atkinson, you’ll notice a bare pedestal. This once held a statue of Henry Atkinson himself. Unfortunately, repeated vandalism, specifically to the statue’s nose in the 1970s, led to its relocation to the nearby Lopdell House. So who was this Henry Atkinson? He was a civil and water engineer instrumental in Auckland’s search for a reliable water supply around 1900. The previous sources at the Auckland Domain and Western Springs were proving insufficient for the growing city. Atkinson’s foresight brought him west. Beyond his engineering feats, Atkinson was a pioneer in environmental preservation. He purchased vast stretches of bush-clad land, areas we now cherish as regional parks and vital water catchment areas. These lands, his legacy, were generously donated back to the people of Auckland. So, as you take in the panoramic views from Mount Atkinson, remember the man whose vision helped shape this landscape. He not only quenched Auckland’s thirst but also preserved its natural beauty for generations to come.
