In 1955, a beacon of knowledge and faith opened its doors. Mount Assisi Academy, a majestic structure nestled in Lemont, Illinois, welcomed young women eager to learn and grow. Mount Assisi Academy wasn’t just a school. It was a home, nurtured by the School Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King. These dedicated women, along with a devoted lay faculty, shaped the minds and spirits of generations of students. The Academy’s curriculum was rigorous. Eight periods a day, each 43 minutes long, filled with challenging academics. There was also time for independent study, co-curricular activities, and athletics. Mount Assisi Academy aimed to provide a holistic education, fostering Christian leadership in its students. The classrooms buzzed with activity, and the halls echoed with laughter. The campus, with its beautiful grotto, offered peaceful walks and moments of reflection. The school vibrated with energy, hosting events like the Turkey Bowl flag football game and the annual Christmas Mass. For sixty years, Mount Assisi Academy thrived. It became a cornerstone of the community, shaping the lives of over 6,200 alumnae. But in 2014, a somber announcement echoed through the halls. Falling enrollment and funding deficits forced the school to close its doors. The news was met with sadness and disbelief. A candlelight vigil illuminated the cold February night, a testament to the love and devotion felt for the Academy. The final closing ceremony was a bittersweet celebration, a tribute to the legacy of the Sisters, faculty, and students. Though the physical building may be closed, the spirit of Mount Assisi Academy lives on in the hearts of those whose lives it touched. Their memories, like echoes in the halls, remain a testament to the power of faith, education, and community.
