“Like the Ark, we rested there.” That’s what Horatio Spencer Wills said when he named Mount Ararat. This peak is not the biblical mountain. It is a special landmark in Victoria.

Mount Ararat stands about 616 meters high. Europeans first saw it around 1837. But Wills gave it its name in 1841. He was searching for a place to settle with his family and animals. After a long journey, they stopped near a creek to rest. Wills looked at the hill and felt a sense of peace. He compared their arrival to Noah’s Ark landing after the flood.

The name Mount Ararat stuck. It represents a place of rest and new beginnings. Gold was discovered near Mount Ararat in 1854. A small town started about eight kilometers from the mountain. It was initially called Mount Ararat too.

In 1856, Wesleyan Methodists set up a tent for preaching. Because the tent was mounted on wheels it was called ‘Noah’s Ark’. Gold discoveries shifted. So did the population and the canvas chapel.

Around 1857, even more gold was found. This time, the find was near the present-day township. The settlement’s name changed to Ararat in 1858. Ararat became a town in 1934. It grew into a city by 1950.

Ararat’s history connects strongly to Noah’s Flood. The town’s motto is “Gaudium adfero.” It means “I bring joy.” Sir Redmond Barry suggested a coat of arms featuring the Ark. It also includes a dove and an olive branch. These symbols reflect the story of Noah. They represent hope and new beginnings after a great challenge.

The mountain and the town share a unique bond. Mount Ararat provided rest for Wills and his family. The town of Ararat offered new opportunities for gold miners. Both are symbols of hope and prosperity in Victoria.

Today, Ararat is a thriving community. It is known for its wool and wines. The name Mount Ararat reminds us of its rich past. It echoes the story of Noah and new beginnings. Next time you see Mount Ararat remember Wills words. Think about the hope and joy it represents.
