Feel the wind. It whispers tales of the Moulin Louis Ricard. This cylindrical tower mill stands proudly. It’s the fifth and final mill built on the Frédéric Mistral esplanade. Built in 1729 by Louis Ricard a baker from Allauch it’s a testament to the area’s milling history.

The Moulin Louis Ricard is unique. Unlike most Provençal mills it boasts a cellar. Called a ‘moulin de crotte’ in the Occitan language this cellar served as storage. Grain and sails were kept safe within its cool depths. This is very rare. Most mills were built on hills not in valleys.

Its sturdy stone base supports a rotating roof. This allows the sails to catch the wind no matter the direction. Imagine the rhythmic whirring of the sails. Picture the miller diligently working within. The wind’s power transformed into the energy to grind wheat. Grain poured into the hopper was crushed between the stationary and rotating millstones. The resulting flour collected in a wooden bin on the ground floor.

This wasn’t just any mill. The Moulin Louis Ricard was one of several. They thrived until the Industrial Revolution. After 1900 they lost their sails and became simple hay barns. Yet the Moulin Louis Ricard was fully restored in 2013. Its mechanism is intact. Today it’s the only working mill in the Marseille area.

The miller even offers tours. Small groups can hear stories. They can learn how wind turns into motive power and wheat into flour. For a small fee you can experience this unique piece of history. A trip to the Moulin Louis Ricard is a step back in time. It’s a journey into the heart of Provence’s milling past. Don’t miss this opportunity. The sights sounds and smells of this mill are truly unforgettable.
