“A windmill a symbol of Nanterre” The Moulin des Gibets stands before you. It’s more than just a windmill. It’s a piece of history a testament to Nanterre’s past.

This remarkable windmill possibly dates back to the 15th century. Some say it’s even older. That’s a long time to withstand the Parisian winds. The Moulin des Gibets is one of four windmills that once graced Nanterre. The others are long gone.

From 1785 to 1840 Thérèse Figueur owned the Moulin des Gibets. She was quite the character. She served as a model for “Madame Sans Gêne” a famous painting. She even participated in the French Revolution and Napoleonic campaigns. Quite a life for a windmill owner.

In 1949 Nanterre purchased the Moulin des Gibets and its surrounding park. They transformed it into a recreational area a center for air and leisure. In 1970 a carpenter from the Lot region painstakingly restored the windmill. He repaired the tower the chestnut wood framework the roof and the 24-meter-long wings.

The grand reopening was on March 6 1971. Today the Moulin des Gibets stands proudly. It’s a reminder of Nanterre’s rich heritage and its resilient spirit. It’s surrounded by a park an elementary school and a recreational center. Children play where millers once toiled.

Sadly you can’t go inside. It’s for safety reasons. However you can admire its beauty from afar. The Moulin des Gibets is a silent storyteller a timeless landmark. It’s an intriguing blend of the past and present a symbol of Nanterre’s enduring legacy. You can find more information at the Nanterre tourist office if you are interested.
