Tucked away in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, Motuihe Island Campsite offers more than just stunning beaches and tranquil campsites. It whispers tales of resilience, echoing with the footsteps of history. Motuihe Island Campsite sits on an island once known as Te Motu-a-Ihenga, “Ihenga’s Island,” commemorating a visit from a Te Arawa ancestor in the 14th century. Long before tents dotted the landscape, Māori inhabitants cultivated gourds and taro, leaving behind remnants of their life in the form of pā sites and food storage pits. The arrival of Europeans in the 1840s brought a new wave of transformation to Motuihe Island. Farming became the main activity. The island’s Norfolk pines and olive trees stand as silent witnesses to this era. By 1872, Motuihe Island transformed into Auckland’s quarantine station. This was a crucial point in the island’s history, as it became the first line of defense against infectious diseases. It served this vital role for almost 50 years. During World War I, the island saw a darker chapter. The quarantine station was repurposed as an internment camp. Here, the legendary Count Felix von Luckner and his crew were held after their capture. In a daring Christmas escapade, von Luckner commandeered the island’s launch and sailed towards the Kermadec Islands. He became a folk hero in New Zealand for his daring, despite being recaptured. The island’s role shifted again with the outbreak of World War II. The quarantine station was transformed into HMNZS Tamaki, a naval training base, contributing significantly to New Zealand’s war effort. After the war, Motuihe Island was eventually designated as a recreation reserve. Today, Motuihe Island Campsite offers visitors a chance to connect with this rich history. As you set up your tent near the sandy shores, remember the echoes of those who walked here before. Imagine the quarantine station bustling with activity, or picture naval recruits training on the very ground you stand on. Motuihe Island Campsite is not just a place to camp; it’s a journey through time.
