Did you know that the Mosteiro de Santa Teresa de Jesus was once home to royalty? This convent holds secrets within its walls. It whispers tales of noble ladies and a princess who traded courtly life for a Carmelite habit.

The Mosteiro de Santa Teresa de Jesus stands on Rua do Norte in Lisbon’s Carnide parish. It is also known as the Santa Teresa de Jesus of the Order of the Discalced Carmelites. It also goes by the name of Santo Alberto convent. This sacred space has a fascinating past.

In 1642 Micaela Margarida de Sant’Ana founded the convent. She was daughter of Matthias of the Holy Roman Empire. She was also niece to John IV. António Gomes da Mata donated the land. He was the kingdom’s High-Courier.

A significant event occurred in 1650. D. Maria the Infanta came to the religious house. She was John IV’s daughter. She received her education here. She even wore the Carmelites’ habit after her father’s death. D. Maria played a vital role. She spurred the church and convent’s completion. She also ensured its ornamentation. It was adorned with paintings, goldwork and utensils.

D. Maria’s story is compelling. Born in 1644 she was recognized by her father. He declared her legitimate. She received a Donation Letter for several villages. Before entering the convent at age six she was educated by António de Cavide. In 1650 she joined the Discalced Carmelites cloister. She received instruction from Mother Micaela Margarida de Sant’Ana. After her father’s death in 1656 she embraced the Carmelite habit.

The Mosteiro de Santa Teresa de Jesus served a unique purpose. It housed noble ladies and widows. However religious orders faced a ban in 1834. Then it became a religious retreat. It remained so until the last nun’s death in 1881.

Imagine life within these walls. Noble women sought solace and spiritual growth. D. Maria found purpose and devotion. The Mosteiro de Santa Teresa de Jesus stands as a testament to faith. It honors female education and royal patronage.

As you stand before the Mosteiro de Santa Teresa de Jesus consider its legacy. It has provided refuge, education and spiritual guidance. Its story intertwines with noble families and royal figures. The convent stands as a reminder of Lisbon’s rich history. It is a beautiful landmark in the Carnide parish.
