A hush falls as we stand before the imposing façade of the Mosteiro de Odivelas. Don’t let its serene presence fool you, for within these walls echoes a history as dramatic as any stage play. The Mosteiro de Odivelas wasn’t always this tranquil haven. It was founded amidst a whirlwind of royal intrigue and divine intervention. Legend has it that King Dinis, while hunting near Beja, found himself at the mercy of a ferocious bear. He swore to build a monastery should he survive the encounter. Miraculously, he escaped, and true to his word, he established the Mosteiro de Odivelas in 1295. Imagine the bustle of construction, the clinking of chisels against stone as this magnificent structure rose from what was then a remote corner of the Portuguese hinterland. This was no ordinary monastery. It was a Cistercian convent, its design adhering to the austere principles laid down by St. Bernard of Clairvaux. The Mosteiro de Odivelas holds within its hallowed halls the tomb of King Dinis himself. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry of his recumbent statue, a masterpiece of 14th-century Portuguese sculpture. Tragically, both his tomb and that of his daughter, Maria Afonso, also interred here, bear the scars of the 1755 earthquake and the ravages of Napoleon’s troops. As you explore further, you’ll discover not one, but two cloisters. The main cloister, with its Gothic arches, speaks to the monastery’s early years. In contrast, the Claustro da Moura, named for its 18th-century fountain topped by a Moorish woman, hints at later architectural influences. Each corner of the Mosteiro de Odivelas whispers tales of kings and queens, of artistic endeavors and religious fervor, making it a treasure trove of Portuguese history.
