Imagine a sanctuary where all are welcome. Most Holy Redeemer Church stands as an inclusive Catholic community. It embraces people of all backgrounds.

Established in 1900 Most Holy Redeemer Church has deep roots. It serves as the Roman Catholic religious center of the Castro neighborhood. This location is at 100 Diamond Street.

In the 1950s the Castro District changed. Most Holy Redeemer became a haven. It was a haven for religious conservatism. Tensions rose with the area’s gay community. A tragic event occurred in 1961. Students from Most Holy Redeemer committed a crime. This further strained relations.

By 1979 Most Holy Redeemer School closed. The parish suffered from low membership. Then in 1982 Father Anthony McGuire arrived. He sought to revitalize the church. A gay man suggested outreach to the LGBTQ community. The idea was approved unanimously.

Most Holy Redeemer Church began hosting events. These events featured LGBTQ speakers. In 1983 the Gay and Lesbian Outreach Committee formed. It was the first of its kind in a Roman Catholic church. Elderly members embraced the new gay parishioners. Father Tony McGuire called them “the gays and the grays”.

The AIDS epidemic struck in the 1980s. Most Holy Redeemer responded. It created support groups and meal programs. Elderly women cared for “their boys” in hospice. In 1987 a forty-hour prayer service honored those with AIDS. This became an annual tradition.

Father Zachary Shore succeeded Father Tony McGuire in 1990. He solidified Most Holy Redeemer’s welcoming stance. By 1998 gays and lesbians made up 80-90% of the congregation. It became the only known majority-out gay Catholic Church.

Today Most Holy Redeemer still welcomes everyone. It is for senior citizens, youth, and families. It is for the healthy and the sick. Most Holy Redeemer is especially for persons with HIV/AIDS. Photos of deceased parishioners line the walls. A scroll lists names of those lost to AIDS. The AIDS support group remains active.

Most Holy Redeemer continues its mission. It offers spiritual guidance and support. The parish embraces diversity and inclusivity. It serves as a beacon of hope in the Castro. It embodies compassion and acceptance. It welcomes all people of good faith. The current pastoral team head is Fr. Matt Link.

Consider Most Holy Redeemer’s legacy. It rose from challenges. It embraced change. It became a sanctuary for all. Its story reflects love, acceptance, and resilience. This church stands as a testament to inclusivity.
