“Imagine steel wires singing in the Adriatic breeze” I would like to start by describing the Most dr. Franja Tuđmana. Here stands the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. It is more than just a crossing. It is a symbol of resilience and a testament to modern engineering.

This bridge connects two sides of the Rijeka Dubrovačka bay. It offers passage and a story etched in its very structure. The Most dr. Franja Tuđmana is named after the first President of Croatia. Its history is intertwined with the nation’s journey to independence.

Originally conceived in 1989, construction faced abrupt halts due to the onset of the Croatian War of Independence. Work on the bridge was restarted in October 1998. It was a period of rebuilding and renewed hope. Walter Bau AG and Konstruktor, Split brought the design to life. The bridge was completed in April 2002. Finally, it opened on May 21, 2002.

The Franjo Tuđman Bridge stretches 518 meters long. Its towering pylon reaches a height of 141.5 meters. The bridge’s design incorporates a cable-stayed structure. Thirty-eight cables support the bridge. They comprise of steel wires encased in polyethylene pipes. The longest span measures 304.5 meters. The bridge allows ships to pass underneath. It has a clearance of 49 meters below.

Initially, there was a naming debate. Some called it the Dubrovnik Bridge. Others wanted to honor President Tuđman. In 2004, the name was officially changed to the Franjo Tuđman Bridge.

Before the bridge, traffic meandered through Rijeka Dubrovačka. The new bridge shortened the journey by 9 kilometers. This promoted faster development.

As you stand here on the Most dr. Franja Tuđmana feel the hum of traffic. Look at the stunning views. Remember that you’re experiencing not just a bridge. You’re standing on a symbol of Croatia’s journey.
