Standing before you, a testament to faith and resilience, is the Mosquée d’Asnières. This magnificent place of worship, a beacon of Islamic faith in the heart of Paris, has a rich history spanning over five decades. Its story is one of community, immigration, and a shared desire for peaceful coexistence.
The origins of the Mosque date back to the 1960s, when Asnières-sur-Seine, a rapidly expanding industrial hub, drew thousands of immigrants from North Africa. Driven by economic opportunity and a longing for a place to practice their faith, these workers, many from Maghreb, found themselves yearning for a community gathering space.
The first initiative came from one of these workers, who generously opened a part of his home to host Friday prayers. Word quickly spread, and soon the faithful banded together to secure a bigger space, a more fitting place to fulfill their religious needs.
They found it in the neighboring Saint-Joseph des Quatre Routes church, which, in a remarkable act of interfaith collaboration, rented a room to the Muslim community. The congregation grew, and soon, it was time for ownership. Through a dedicated effort, they raised funds to purchase the space, solidifying their presence and marking a milestone in the Mosque’s journey.
On July 7, 1975, the ‘Al-Hidayah Al-Islamiyah’ Cultural Association was officially established and registered with the Hauts-de-Seine prefecture, officially marking the Mosque’s birth. The space, the first stone of the edifice, expanded over time to accommodate the ever-growing community.
The Mosque, now one of the largest in Ile-de-France, symbolizes the unity and resilience of its community, a reflection of the changing face of Paris with its rich tapestry of cultures.
