For years the Muslim community of Saint-Denis lacked a proper place of worship. They had a small prayer room. It was in the Cité Stalingrad dating back to 1976. This was far from ideal. It simply couldn’t accommodate the growing congregation. The dream of a larger mosque grew. A mosque worthy of their faith.
Then came the ambitious project of the Mosquée Al-Amel. Fundraising began in the early 2000s. The sale of the land was finalized in 2004. The building permit followed in 2006. The first stone was laid in 2007. Actual construction however only started around 2009-2010. This was a slow process. It was dependent on the steady flow of donations. Most of the funds came from the faithful.
The completed Mosquée Al-Amel is remarkable. It boasts a spacious prayer hall of 1200 square meters. There’s another 300 square meters upstairs for women. This new mosque accommodates 2500 people. Twice the capacity of the old prayer room. The building is beautifully integrated into its surroundings. It’s a welcoming structure. It’s open to all whether Muslim or not. It shows a commitment to being part of the community.
Beyond the prayer hall are additional buildings. These are approximately 500 square meters. They’re dedicated to educational and social activities. There is also a large underground parking area. It provides 3900 square meters of parking space. Future plans include solar panels. The mosque aims to become an environmentally friendly structure.
